CENTERVILLE HUSTLE BASKETBALL CLUB

Frequently Asked Questions

QUESTION:

What programs does the club offer? Select or Recreational? Both?

ANSWER:

The club has "select" or "competitive" teams for boys and girls in grades 3-6, a boys "recreational" program for grades 1-6, and a boys "intermediate" program for grades 7-9.

The Select program represents a significant commitment of time and effort from mid-October through early March, with teams practicing twice per week and typically playing approximately 25-40 games, averaging 1-3 games per week against other area teams.

The Recreational program runs from late November through mid-March. It is less competitive but still offers the boys the opportunity to have fun and learn the game. It also requires much less of a time commitment with one weekday practice and one weekend game per week, with a 10-12 game schedule being the normal Recreational program's season.

The Intermediate program follows a track similar to the Recreational program. It runs from late November through mid-March. It offers an average of one practice and one game per week, with a 10-12 game schedule being the goal. This program uses full-sized gyms, certified adult referees and emphasizes having fun with the game.

QUESTION:
How far do we have to travel?

ANSWER:
The Recreational program is intramural, all practices and games are held at local gyms, most at Centerville City School gyms. The Select program teams practice at local school gyms. The competitive Metro league has a home and away schedule with each opponent. Home games are held at a local school gym. Away games are at the opponent's gym. The farthest away is probably Eaton which is around 45 minutes. Most are between 15-30 minutes away from Centerville. Some teams choose to play in the Kingdom league. In that case, all games are at the Kingdom Sports Complex in Franklin which is about 20 minutes from Centerville.

QUESTION:
When are practices and games?

ANSWER:
The recreational teams normally have one practice during the week and one game on the weekend (mostly on Saturdays). The competitive teams normally have two practices per week. Competitive teams normally play 1-3 games per week, many games are on the weekends but some will be during the week. It is entirely likely that you will have some away games during the week.

QUESTION:
Is my son/daughter required to practice his/her basketball skills?

ANSWER:
No, but it sure helps! On a serious note: the more your son or daughter practices his/her skills, the better they will be at them. Basketball is a great sport for improvement of individual skills in the "off-season" or really anytime that a player wants to focus on improvement.

QUESTION:
Why are select tryout sessions closed to non-coaching parents?

ANSWER:
Experience has shown that closing tryouts to parents tends to relax the players and provides a less stressful tryout environment. Not having mom or dad looking over their shoulder allows players to focus on "playing" and not on their parent's reactions to the child's play or to a parent's well-intended but distracting "coaching" from the sideline. Any questions regarding this policy should be addressed to a club board member.

QUESTION:
I have registered online. Now what do I do?

ANSWER:
The answer depends on the program. If registering for a boys' or girls' Select tryout, your next step is to make sure that your son/daughter attends all tryout sessions for his or her grade. If registering for our Recreational, your next step is to make sure you and your son attend the evaluation day. If registering for our Intermediate program, your next step is to wait for your coach to contact you (late November) with further instructions. Times, dates and locations for tryouts and evaluation days are listed in other areas of the website.
